The purpose of the meeting was to review the implementation status of the LMCnet projects, identify tasks to complete, and to assign time lines for completion.
Mike Dyre reviewed the implementation status of LMCnet based on the
revised notes from the December 9th technical committee meeting.
It was suggested by David Pecararo that any savings resulting from the
implementation of LMCnet be documented.
Internet Services
Internet service is available from UofL through LMCnet. UofL Hospital
(ULH) currently receives Internet service through UofL, and Jewish Hospital
expressed interest in acquiring Internet services. The group discussed
service levels and quality of service issues. It is anticipated that, based
on preliminary analysis of vendor costs, Internet service through LMCnet
may be provided at half the typical vendor cost. Exact pricing and a draft
service level agreement will be developed by UofL in the next two weeks.
Individual meetings will be set up with the LMCnet partners to assess their
readiness to implement Internet services.
Network Connectivity
UofL, ULH, and Jewish Hospital are currently connected to the LMCnet
fiber. Norton plans to connect in the 1st quarter of 2000. Rich
Johnson suggested that, as we look at network access to LMCnet, we focus
on industry-wide networking standards for greatest compatibility.
Removal of Dedicated Circuits
Discussion of the status of dedicated circuits was very brief. Some efforts have been made to implement an SNA link between Jewish and ULH over the ATM network. More work will be needed for the circuit to be operational.
Protocols
The group discussed the fact that the LMCnet backbone is implemented
as an IP-only network. In some applications SNA DLC and Novell IPX protocols
are desired. UofL will develop information on the IP protocol issue for
the next CIO meeting. This issue will also be discussed in individual meetings
with the LMCnet partners.
Action Items
1. UofL will set up individual meetings with
LMCnet partners to assess readiness to
- implement Internet and other network services through LMCnet, and
- use LMCnet as an IP-only network
2. UofL will provide an Internet service price structure within two weeks.
3. UofL will also draft a sample Service Level
Agreement for participating organizations.
The next meeting of the CIOs will be on Thursday, February 24, 2000.
The joint CIO/Technical Committee group will meet next on March 9th.
